Save on your Italian Mobile Phone
If you are like me and still have many people in the UK contacting you in Italy, then the cost to them is obviously increased if you use an Italian provider, more so than most other European countries. I also have my UK SIM which means the costs of calling me on that number will not incur any extra costs for them, but without the right deal will cost you a lot more. In fact it is cheaper to use my TalkTalk in Italy than many Italian mobile companies.
If you are not intending to stay permanently in Italy or for an extended period then consider using a Global SIM card from 0044 to avoid roaming charges. They have a European SIM too but Italy is not yet supported.
One thing that costs both the caller and receiver is voicemail. I have always believed that if someone cannot get a hold of me at any given moment, then they will try again later, especially if it is urgent. Having voicemail does not guarentee that you know they have left you a message.
I was trying to disable voicemail on WIND (pay as you go), but after following their advice of dialing this code ##002# which should delete ALL diverts and ##004# delete ALL conditional diverts, my voicemail was still activated. Then I discovered this...
If you wish to stop your voicemail from taking a message any time your phone is unanswered, unavailable, or busy, and so prevent connection charges for the caller; or you simply don't wish to use voicemail at all, there is a simple way to disable it.
It should work for all networks but only in part with WIND.
There are three reasons why voicemail is activated and each has an MMI code:
Divert if no reply (61)
Divert if unavailable (62)
Divert if busy (67)
Firstly, check the current status (this returns a message telling you how your service is presently set up. Each time you enter a code you must press the call button to send it.:
*#61#
*#62#
*#67#
You should see that your calls are being diverted to your voicemail, which is often 121. Take note of your voicemail number, just in case you wish to re-enable it in the future. In my case for WIND it is 00393209954000
I believe all these codes should be free, but it's always good to check your balance if you are on PAYG.
To delete each of the diverts:
##61#
##62#
##67#
These will remove all diverts to your voicemail.
To re-enable the diverts to your voicemail:
**61*00393209954000#
**62*00393209954000#
**67*00393209954000#
Always use *#61#, *#62#, and *#67# to check the status.
I did this and discovered that only the (61) divert if no reply code worked. My phone is still set up with voicemail for (62) when unavailable and (67) if busy.
So now my only option is to find and visit a WIND shop as there is nothing on their website that helps.
